Eating Healthy While Traveling

How to eat healthy while traveling. “I can’t eat healthy since I travel,” are words that I often hear from friends and clients. Here, you will find some tips and tricks on how to eat healthy while traveling.

If traveling by car we might have the liberty of packing more items than traveling by air, let’s give some examples. For either, I pack nuts/dried fruit bars like Lara bars, baggie of nuts, seeds, and coconut flakes. I take a variety of bars and nuts. We also usually make some granola ahead of time for our breakfasts. This saves time and money in the mornings when we arrive at our destination.

Upon arrival of our destination or even ahead of time, locate a great salad bar.  You might be within driving distance to Whole Foods, Sweet Tomatoes or another “all you can eat” salad bar.

Make healthy choices while at the salad bar. My temptation is to eat everything in sight and every time I try this option I always end up paying for it so what I’ve learned is to stick to the green leafy vegetables, beans or legumes, root veggies, and starches. After loading my salad up with a lot of vegetables, then I will enjoy a sweet potato and bowl of soup if it is made in house. For salad dressing the best solution is the olive oil and vinegar option that is always available and is something that you can ask for if it is not out. Add some flavor and spice to your salad with pickles, pickled jalapeño, or pepperoncini.

This is one of our family favorite ways to eat while traveling. Typically, if we are vacationing we will find a store and do a bit of shopping. We will either bring or buy oatmeal and soak it overnight and cook it the next morning for a quick on the go breakfast. Fruit is another staple for travel. Some great snack options that we purchase to keep in our room in the optional fridge are guacamole, salsa, hummus with carrots, small peppers and maybe even a few non-gmo corn chips.

We do enjoy our vacations, everything in moderation. When we can, we snack and start our day with yummy goodness from home. We find our family remains healthy on our trips. The healthier we eat and the more physical activity that we get, the better we all feel. When we get out of balance with our eating and lifestyle then we start to feel bad or get sick. This is why we prefer to start the day off right with a breakfast from home and eat a variety of fruits and veggies even while traveling.

A couple of supplements that are a must have while traveling are: Probiotics and digestive enzymes. The ones that our family uses and trust may be found here.
