Microwaving

Are microwaves dangerous? It is a common thought by some that microwaves cause plastic containers and food wrap to release toxic, cancer-causing chemicals known as carcinogens.

Ultimately the choice to use the microwave is up to you. Consider the following: It’s been proven that plastic releases endocrine disrupters when warmed. This may cause infertility, birth defects and possibly cancer.  It has also been shown to damage the disease fighting agents in breast milk that offer protection for your baby. Some experts believe that microwaves lead to nutritional deficiency. The heat that microwaves employ to heat foods kills vitamins, minerals and other vital nutrients. One study proved that 97% of the nutrients were destroyed after microwaving.

Try this experiment. Heat water in a microwave and allow it to cool then water a plant. Will the plant die? This would be fun to try with children.

If you do decide to microwave, consider heating food in glass and be sure that they are labeled microwave safe.

America as a society is increasing in obesity. The thought is that we are overfed and undernourished. Is the fast society of the microwave to be part of the blame?

Weigh out your own personal pros and cons and decide if eating nutritious food from the microwave is better than not eating nutritious food at all.

I personally, don’t own a microwave. However, when I was younger I used one to warm my food especially while at work or at school.  We are a busy society and are always looking for quick fixes.  Our family has found other ways to reheat our food including reheating on top of the stove, toaster oven, steamer, or warm it up in an instant pot.

Will you choose to microwave or not?
