Summer Spelling

Summer time is awesome! I am thankful for the extra time to spend with my girls. It is a great time to get ahead or propel forward in academics.

My two younger girls struggle with spelling. I am sure learning English as a second language at the age of 4 and 4.5 is part of the learning difficulty. This summer we will have a blast, however, we will daily continue with our spelling games. Our goal is to help our girls put their spelling words in their long term memory. They can store them temporarily in their short term memory for the test on Fridays, after that the information is GONE! We will continue working with the same spelling words that they have learned this year in school with hands-on games. We will utilize 3 ways of learning which include: Auditory, Kinesthetic and Visual.

Today, I am having my girls play scrabble with their spelling words by putting the correct letters together on the board. (kinesthetic) They can have some creativity here by connecting the words in different places. Then after they spell each word correctly they will say the word out loud. (auditory) The entire process is visual stimulation as well. We will work on using our words and add a greater amount of words each week to be sure those words are remaining in their memory. Over time, we will remove these words from our current list and add them back up later for review.

The goal is to put these words in their long term memory and improve their overall spelling of words.

Adoption is awesome, sometimes we must find new ways to incorporate skills to deepen the knowledge. Summer spelling can be a fun process. It may only take 15-20 minutes a day. By having two children doing it at the same time ensures that they are not doing it alone. How will you sharpen your students skills this summer?
